Family Trip to Croatia – Itinerary Ideas and Tips
Croatia is a fantastic destination for a family holiday, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and kid-friendly activities. I traveled with my kids, aged 2 and 6, to Zagreb and Opatija and can attest to the country’s family-friendly nature. With its stunning Adriatic coastline, crystal-clear waters, and numerous islands, children can enjoy endless beach days, swimming, and exploring hidden coves.
When crafting a “Croatia itinerary with kids,” it’s easy to include a variety of activities that cater to both young and older children. Many Croatian towns have pedestrian-friendly old towns perfect for leisurely strolls and discovery. Ferries and boat tours provide exciting ways to island-hop, adding a sense of adventure to the trip. Additionally, Croatia’s family-friendly accommodations, ranging from seaside resorts to rural guesthouses, ensure a comfortable stay for everyone.
I’ll share my tips for making the most of your time while spending 4 days in Croatia with children, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable trip.
Croatia Family Vacation Itinerary
Day 1 – Zagreb
On our first day, we landed in Zagreb, a vibrant city that serves as a perfect introduction to Croatian culture. With my kids, aged 2 and 6, we found Zagreb to be incredibly accommodating and full of activities that kept them entertained. I recommend spending one day here to soak in the city’s unique charm. Definitely find an apartment in the centre so it’s easy to explore the city on your family trip to Croatia.
Start your day with a visit to Ban Jelačić Square, the heart of the city, and then take a ride on the world’s shortest funicular to the Upper Town. My kids loved the short but exciting ride, and the panoramic views from Lotrščak Tower were a hit with the whole family. Don’t miss the Museum of Broken Relationships, which surprisingly has exhibits that are engaging even for younger visitors. For lunch, find a family-friendly restaurant where you can enjoy traditional Croatian cuisine and let the kids try some local dishes.
In the afternoon, head to Maksimir Park, a lush oasis perfect for families. The kids had a great time running around and exploring the playgrounds while we enjoyed the beautiful scenery. If you’re interested in history, a visit to the Zagreb Cathedral and a stroll through Mirogoj Cemetery can be both educational and peaceful. End your day on Tkalčićeva Street, a lively area filled with cafes, shops, and street performers that kept our little ones entertained while we relaxed. This street is perfect for unwinding and enjoying the local atmosphere.

Day 2 – Opatija
On the second day, we went to Opatija, a charming coastal town known for its beautiful seaside promenade and historic villas. There are several ways to get there from Zagreb, such as renting a car or taking a bus from the main bus station, Autobusni Kolodvor Zagreb. We opted to travel by bus with the kids, and it was a smooth journey. We booked our tickets in advance online. The trip took around 3 hours and 20 minutes, with two breaks – a 10-minute stop and a 20-minute stops.
Why Opatija? Because is a sophisticated and upscale area in Croatia, known for its elegant charm and luxurious ambiance. This coastal town, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” boasts grand historic villas, opulent hotels, and beautifully landscaped parks that exude old-world elegance. The famous Lungomare promenade, stretching 12 kilometers along the coastline, offers breathtaking views and easy access to pristine beaches and scenic spots. Opatija’s refined atmosphere, combined with its crystal-clear waters and mild climate, makes it a premier destination for those seeking a touch of luxury in their Croatian travels.
For families, Opatija is a fantastic place to relax and enjoy a variety of activities. The town’s well-maintained parks, such as Park Angiolina, provide a great space for kids to play and explore. The crystal-clear waters and pebble beaches are perfect for swimming and sunbathing, and there are plenty of family-friendly cafes and restaurants where you can savor delicious local cuisine. And moreover it’s not crowded here even during the high season when we went.
Where to Stay in Opatija
We stayed at Hotel Ičići from Liburnia Hotels and Villas. I think it’s a great choice for families visiting Opatija with kids. Located just a short distance from the town center (4 minutes by car or bus, approx. 30 minute walk by feet), the hotel offers a perfect blend of comfort, convenience, and family-friendly amenities. The spacious rooms are well-designed to accommodate families, providing enough space for everyone to relax and unwind.
One of the standout features of Hotel Ičići is its extensive range of facilities tailored for children. The hotel boasts a large outdoor swimming pool with a dedicated children’s area, ensuring the little ones have a safe and fun place to splash around. The on-site playground and organized kids’ activities keep children entertained throughout the day, giving parents a chance to enjoy some well-deserved relaxation. Additionally, the hotel’s proximity to the beach means that family beach outings are just a short walk away.
Our little ones thoroughly enjoyed the kids club, where dedicated staff members engaged them in fun activities, providing us with peace of mind knowing they were in good hands. Meanwhile, our eldest was enthralled by the game room, equipped with a PlayStation that kept him entertained during our downtime at the hotel. And there is also there’s a cute mascot LIRI!
Hotel rooms at Hotel Ičići are designed with families in mind, offering spacious and comfortable accommodations. We stayed in a family room with connecting doors and with a balcony, and the sea view from our room was truly breathtaking – easily the best feature of Hotel Ičići. Waking up to the sight of the Adriatic Sea each morning added a special touch to our holiday, making each day feel like a serene escape. The room itself was well-appointed, with plenty of space for the whole family to relax. The modern amenities and thoughtful touches, such as comfortable beds and ample storage, made our stay very comfortable.
We booked full pension package, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfasts were satisfying and varied, setting the tone for our activities. Lunches were convenient and fulfilling, perfect for breaks between our outings. Dinner service, starting a bit late for us at 7 pm, could be busy and occasionally crowded. All in one the buffet spread offers a wide variety of dishes that cater to diverse tastes, ensuring everyone finds something to enjoy. From freshly prepared pizzas and savory squid risotto to classic fries, refreshing watermelon, and a tempting array of desserts, there’s always something different and delicious to try.
Day 3 – Ičići
Ičići is renowned for it’s stunning beach and one of the finest marinas on the Adriatic coast. With over a decade of recognition, Ičići beach proudly holds the prestigious Blue Flag, symbolizing exceptional service and cleanliness. It consistently ranks among Croatia’s top five best-maintained beaches, ensuring a pristine and enjoyable seaside experience for visitors.
On the third day, it’s time to take to unwind and choose your preferred spot for sunbathing. You can opt for the spacious pool at the hotel or relax on the hotel beach. For us with kids it was not suitable since the beach features stone surfaces and access to the water via stairs. Hard to get to the water with kids.
But just stone throw aways we discovered a serene and idyllic bay that was perfect for kids to swim and provided a peaceful atmosphere for us to enjoy some quiet relaxation. A bit later we decided to explore the harbor area which offered scenic views along the Adriatic coast. There is a big beache, a mix of stone and pebbles. Here you can find cafes, playgrounds, and volleyball courts where families and friends gather for activities and relaxation.
For those who don’t like to sunbath can enjoy a leisurely walk along the waterfront towards Opatija. The views from here are just breathtaking!
Day 4 – Mošćenička Draga
Mošćenička Draga is a charming coastal town in Croatia that offers a wonderful experience for families even if you are visiting Croatia with toddler. Known for its picturesque beaches and crystal-clear waters, it provides ample opportunities for swimming, building sandcastles, and enjoying water sports suitable for children of all ages. The town’s relaxed atmosphere and scenic surroundings make it ideal for leisurely strolls along the waterfront, hiking or exploring the local cafes and shops.
To get from Ičići to Mošćenička Draga, you can easily travel by car, which takes approximately 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. Alternatively, there are also local bus services available that connect the two destinations, offering a convenient option for families who prefer public transportation.
