DAY 1
Grote Markt (Market Square)
Welcome to Market Square, the beating heart of Bruges and a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a taste of fairy tale charm. As you step into this enchanting square, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a mesmerizing array of multi-colored Gothic buildings that seem straight out of a traditional Disney princess movie. But Market Square offers more than just picturesque scenery—it’s a hub of history, culture, and culinary delights waiting to be discovered.
Every Wednesday morning you can find here a market with fresh fruits and vegetables from the local farmers. Also a great way to immerse into the Belgian culture.
Belfry Tower (Belfort) and Climb to the Top
Standing proudly at the heart of the city square, the Belfry Tower is an iconic symbol of Bruges, dominating its skyline and offering a glimpse into the city’s rich history. Originally constructed in the 13th century, the tower served a dual purpose as an observation post and a treasury, safeguarding the city against potential threats while also housing valuable treasures.
Throughout the centuries, the Belfry Tower has witnessed the ebb and flow of Bruges’ fortunes, surviving fires, wars, and political upheavals. Today, you can climb the 366 steps along the winding spiral staircase. On the top you will be offered a bird’s-eye view of Bruges unlike any other, providing a unique perspective on the city’s layout and landmarks. Admission to the tower typically ranges from €12 to €14 for adults, with children under the age of 6 granted free entry.
Try Belgian Waffles or Make them yourself
The best waffles that you can try in Bruges in my opinion are at Albert’s. You can have various toppings but I think just a plane one is the best! Also you can learn how to make them yourself by joining a workshop. Which is also paired with beer tasting. I think it’s WIN WIN situation!
Burg Square & Basilica of Holy Blood
Just a stone’s throw away from Market Square, you’ll discover the equally enchanting Burg Square, a gem nestled in the heart of Bruges. This historic square is adorned with magnificent Gothic architecture, including the imposing city hall, which stands as a testament to the city’s rich heritage.
One of the highlights of Burg Square is the Basilica of the Holy Blood, a venerable church dating back to the 12th century. The lower chapel, with its Romanesque design, exudes a sense of ancient reverence, while the upper chapel, boasting neo-Gothic elements, offers a captivating blend of history and artistry.
However, it is within the upper chapel where the true wonder lies. Here, ensconced within the hallowed walls, rests an awe-inspiring relic—the vial of Holy Blood. Legend has it that this sacred artifact contains a droplet of blood and cloth believed to be from the time of Christ’s crucifixion, making it a profoundly significant pilgrimage site for believers and a fascinating historical artifact for all who visit.

De Republiek is a cultural hub that seamlessly combines delicious cuisine with a vibrant atmosphere. Jan van Eyckplein
Nestled in the center of Bruges, yet surprisingly free from the bustling crowds of tourists, stands the Manhattan of Burgundian times—a lively port where traders from across Europe converged, their voices mingling in a cacophony of languages. Amidst the hustle and bustle, the Toll House and the Rijkepijndershuis buzzed with activity, while onlookers observed from the Burghers’ Lodge.
