Switzerland is full of impressive landscapes and well-known destinations. However, what makes it especially rewarding to explore are the smaller towns and villages that often remain just under the radar. Not only do they offer the same natural beauty and sense of calm, but they also come with fewer crowds and a more authentic, local feel. On a recent trip, I had the chance to spend time in two such places—Vitznau and Lucerne—and both stood out for different reasons. While each has its own unique charm, together they offer a perfect introduction to central Switzerland. So, if you’re looking to experience the region at a slower, more relaxed pace, these are two destinations well worth considering.
Vitznau is a small lakeside village set on a quiet bay of Lake Lucerne, right at the foot of Mount Rigi. It’s the kind of place where everything seems to move a little more slowly—in a good way. The lake, the mountains, and the clean, open space give it a peaceful atmosphere. Vitznau is also a great base for exploring the region. From here, you can take a boat across the lake, or ride the cogwheel railway up Rigi for panoramic views. It’s not flashy, but that’s part of its charm.
Where to Stay in Vitznau

During my stay in Vitznau, I spent a few nights at the 4-star Hotel Vitznauerhof, and it was truly one of the highlights of the trip. I was there with a friend, and we both agreed it’s the kind of place that feels special from the moment you arrive. The location is hard to beat—right on the edge of Lake Lucerne with sweeping views of the water and the mountains. It’s also a great base for exploring the area, whether you’re taking the boat across the lake or heading up Mount Rigi on the nearby cogwheel railway.

One of the things we loved most was good food. The breakfast each morning was a real treat—not only was there a great variety, but I especially loved having fresh watermelon, blueberries, and melon to start the day. You can also ask for eggs made to order—scrambled, poached, omelette, you name it—and they’ll be freshly prepared for you. In the evening, we treated ourselves to dinner at the hotel’s Michelin-level restaurant. The spa area was another highlight—especially the outdoor pool and variety of saunas. After a day of walking or sightseeing, it was the perfect way to unwind.

Our room was beautifully designed with lots of attention to detail—comfortable beds, stylish touches, and big windows that let in plenty of natural light. The whole atmosphere of the hotel felt warm and thoughtful. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or even as a family, the Hotel Vitznauerhof offers the comfort and charm you’d hope for in a Swiss lakeside retreat.
Vitznau Things to Do: Swiss Lake in Summer

Rigi Railway – the oldest mountain railway in Europe
One of the best things to do in Vitznau is take a ride on Europe’s first cogwheel railway up to Mount Rigi, known as the “Queen of the Mountains.” The train journey offers breathtaking views as it ascends to Rigi Kulm, the highest peak. From the top, you’ll enjoy stunning panoramas of Lake Lucerne, the Alps, and even distant views of Germany. Whether you’re hiking, snapping photos, or simply relaxing, the mountain is a must-visit.
To make the most of it, the Mount Rigi Day Pass offers unlimited travel on the cogwheel trains from Vitznau and Goldau, as well as cable cars from Weggis and Kräbel. It’s a great value for exploring the area. If you travel in summer definitely purchase ticket online. It’s a pretty popular activity.
Trip across Lake Lucerne

A visit to Lake Lucerne is a must! It’s such a beautiful experience, offering some of the most stunning views in Switzerland. The lake, with its crystal-clear waters and surrounding snow-capped mountains, is perfect for a peaceful boat ride. Whether you opt for a historic paddle steamer or a modern cruise, the journey will spoil you with spectacular views of Lucerne’s charming town and the majestic alpine scenery. It’s a tranquil way to soak in the natural beauty of the area.
For those wanting to explore more, the boat routes allow you to easily reach Lucerne city for a day trip. You can enjoy the convenience of the Lake Lucerne Day Pass, which provides unlimited boat travel across the lake, connecting Lucerne with nearby towns like Weggis and Vitznau.
Day Trip to Lucerne
A day trip to Lucerne is an easy and scenic experience, with the journey from Vitznau by boat taking less than an hour. As you cruise across Lake Lucerne, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the charming town itself. Once you arrive, there’s plenty to see and do in just a few hours. Honestly few hours are enough in Lucerne. Here are four of the best activities to enjoy during your visit to this beautiful Swiss city.

1. Explore Lucerne’s Old Town
Lucerne’s Old Town (Altstadt) is a delightful area to wander through, with its cobbled streets, historic buildings, and vibrant squares. You’ll pass colorful houses with frescoed facades, quirky shops, and cozy cafés. Be sure to stop by the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), a wooden bridge dating back to the 14th century, which is adorned with beautiful paintings depicting Lucerne’s history.
The nearby Water Tower is also a great spot. It’s part of the city’s medieval fortress wall and offers free access to climb. From the top, you’ll enjoy stunning panoramic views over the Old Town, Lake Lucerne, and the surrounding mountains. It’s a great spot for a scenic walk and a perfect place to capture the beauty of the city.

2. Visit the Lion Monument
A short walk from the Old Town, the Lion Monument is one of Lucerne’s most famous landmarks. The monument commemorates the Swiss Guards who were killed during the French Revolution in 1792. I personally was impressed with the sculpture. It depicts a dying lion carved into a rock face, is a moving tribute and a must-see during your visit. It’s set in a peaceful park, offering a quiet place to reflect while enjoying the surrounding greenery.
3. Ride the Mt. Pilatus Cable Car
For breathtaking views of Lucerne and the surrounding Alps, take the Mt. Pilatus Cable Car up to the summit. The cable car ride offers panoramic views of Lake Lucerne and the city, and once at the top, you’ll have access to hiking trails, a restaurant, and even a hotel. If you’re short on time, the cable car ride alone is worth it for the incredible vistas. Alternatively, you can take the world’s steepest cogwheel railway from the opposite side of the mountain for a unique experience.
4. Visit the Swiss Museum of Transport
If you’re interested in learning about Switzerland’s history of transportation, head to the Swiss Museum of Transport. Located near the lake, this museum showcases the country’s rich history of railways, automobiles, aviation, and more. It’s a fun and educational stop, especially for families, with interactive exhibits and historical displays. It offers a fascinating look at the role transportation has played in shaping Switzerland’s development.
Vitznau is a fantastic destination to visit in Switzerland, especially during the summer months. With it’s stunning lake views, access to beautiful mountains like Rigi, and charming village atmosphere, it became my personal favourite spot. Whether you’re exploring the natural beauty, enjoying outdoor activities, or simply soaking in the serene surroundings, Vitznau offers an unforgettable Swiss experience!
